At the height of the restrictions against congregating and ban on public masses, Fr Joseph G. Martinez Rea, MG graced our TV screens every Sunday as he interpreted the live Masses for the deaf community. Lourine Oluoch caught up with the priest who is the Archdiocese of Nairobi’s Chaplain to the Deaf as he explains why it is important that the church sees and hears the deaf in evangelization. Who is Fr Martinez?
I am Fr Joseph Martinez Rea, a Guadalupe missionary. I am the priest-in-change of Christ the King parish Kibera, and the chaplain to the deaf in the Archdiocese of Nairobi. I come from Mexico in a city called Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco.
How many languages do you speak?
Six: Spanish, Mexican Sign Language, English, Kimaasai, Kenyan Sign Language, and Kiswahili.
