Easter Unusual: Celebrating Paschal Mystery in an Empty Basilica
By Njoki Githinji
I woke up on the morning of April 12, in time to catch the Easter Sunday Mass on TV. The Mass at the Holy Family Basilica was celebrated by Archbishop Anthony Muheria of Nyeri, and John Cardinal Njue of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, and attended by a handful of priests, a deacon and six choir members. Everyone in the church wore a face mask covering their mouths and noses, and sat meters from each other.
Unlike on typical Easter Sundays when the basilica would celebrate several Masses, there were no faithful in attendance.
“…with the recent closure of our places of worship due to Corona Virus pandemic, an event that has really saddened us, I would not imagine celebrating the Paschal mystery in an empty Basilica.
