The Statue of the Risen Christ, towering atop ‘Jesus Hill’ overlooking Lodwar Town welcomes you to Turkana County. Inspired by the famous Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the statue is part of the Jubilee Shrine put up in 2012 in honour of missionaries who arrived in Lodwar 60 years ago.
The magnificent structure known to the locals as “Rio’ is located in Lodwar, a town west of Lake Turkana, the largest in north-western Kenya, and also the headquarters of Turkana County.
“This shrine came up in the year 2012 when the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar was celebrating 50 years of evangelization of the diocese from 1961 to 2012.
