This October the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Nyeri will be celebrating 100 years since the founding of their congregation.
100 years since three African girls, Cecilia Njeri, Melania Muthoni and Amalia Wambui approached Fr Filippo Perlo at Gaichanjiru parish and expressed their interest in joining religious life.
This makes them the oldest indigenous religious sisters’ congregation in Kenya, second oldest in East Africa after the Bannabikira congregation in Uganda.
77 year old Sr Bertilla Waihiga, the Regional Superior of the congregation in Murang’a and Embu dioceses, likens the congregation to, “A mature tree with strong roots.”
