Last year was the worst Thomas had ever experienced. He had no income. The private school where he was working closed down and went bankrupt. Thankfully, his wife was able to hang on to her job as a cleaner in an office building, despite the pandemic. But her earnings were not enough. One of their children had sickle cell and often needed medicine. What little savings they had accumulated were exhausted after a few months. That was bad enough. For Thomas, the humiliation of having no job was worse than having no money to pay for everything they needed. The family barely managed to survive.
